New World

Nine works by Nastia Gladushchenko presented by Day Gallery Blackheath

A small series of works exploring displacement, the search for home and reconnecting with family.

As a young child I was brought to the other side of the world by my parents who had left Ukraine to find a more fair world. They loved their home, their family and friends but could not continue living in the difficult conditions there so chose to move to Australia in the hope of more opportunities and a better life for us all.

In this latest body of work I want to explore what it means to feel the discomfort but also the electricity and excitement of living in a new country, a new world. This is also the first time I use oil stick in my work in a very loose and rough way to speak to this theme of migration and the willingness to go into the unknown in a naive and brave way.

In this ongoing exploration of blue colours and tones I am working to understand  some of the deepest and bluest feelings Iโ€™ve pushed back into the corners of my heart, not having the courage to face them until now.
